The Christmas story unfolds in the Book of Matthew that Magi, wise men from the East, followed a bright new star to Jerusalem seeking a newborn king. Legend gives their names as Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar. The Magi were re-directed from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, where the king was to be born according to the prophecy of Micah.
Once in Bethlehem, the Magi came upon the infant and His parents, Mary and Joseph. The Magi rejoiced with exceeding great joy and presented the baby Jesus with precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Gift giving is a Christmas tradition for many families. In countless homes, there are stacks of presents under the Christmas tree: toys, video games, sports equipment, electronics and fashionable apparel.
Some families also give simple family gifts at their Christmas gathering:
- listening to grandpa’s stories
- showing kindness to a troubled cousin
- being patient with a crying toddler.
These are the kinds of gifts that endure beyond Christmas.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.
